Plot Summary:
Kurzfassung:
The polar ice caps have melted, and the earth is covered by water. The remaining people travel the seas, in search of survival. Several different societies exist. The Mariner falls from his customary and solitary existence into having to care for a woman and a young girl while being pursued by the evil forces of the Deacon.
by Robbie Smith

Sometime in the future, the polar ice caps have melted and the world's oceans and seas have covered the land. People are few and far between, living in small communities at sea or sailing from one to another as traders. All the people seek dry land.. something nobody has seen.
by Rob Hartill

The world is flooded. Civilisation is lost under the sea. The Mariner sails his trimoran over the seas, drinking his own Urine and visits a floating atoll of "Drifters". When they find the Mariner to be a mutant they sentence him to death. Meanwhile, a girl with supposedly a map to get to dry land tattoo-ed on her back, is the objective for an attack by a gang of smokers who attack the atoll.

Trivia:
Tratsch:
The Slave Colony, a key set, was sunk by a storm and was unusable.

Anna Paquin was the first choice to play Enola.

Rumours abound that director Kevin Reynolds walked off the set with two weeks of filming left, and Kevin Costner completed the film.

Continuity When the balloon starts inflating it is already above the roof, yet after rising 30 feet, roof panels are broken out.

While talking to Gregor, Mariner appears to repeatedly instantly shift from one side of the cage to the other.

When the line to the plane is released the Mariner has the bone gun, but it is gone as he is catapulted off.

On the Deez, even though the plane has just been airborne, when it crashes the propeller is stationary and already bent.

Helen says Enola is like a mirror,'' indicating she knows what a mirror does and is. Later, though, she calls a mirror fragment owned by the Mariner ``reflecting glass,'' indicating that she doesn't know what it's called.

Mariner drops a sail on Helen, but the next shot of the boat shows both sails raised.

The machine gun fire that destroys the Deacon's boat comes from a turret pivoting horizontally towards it; however, the bullets striking the waves as they approach the Deacon's boat contradict the turret's movement.

The size of the anchor that Mariner uses to slide down the cable.

Mariner gains a shotgun when he dives off the supertanker.

When Mariner is about to bungee jump to save Enola, he has on the boots that he lost when captured at the atoll. When brought back into the blimp, he has lost the boots again.
Factual errors There is not enough ice in the polar icecaps to submerge the earth. If there was, the resulting seawater would have been diluted enough to make drinkable.

A primitive bathysphere such as the one used in this film would be compressed to one tenth of its volume by the time it descended only 400 feet below the surface.
Plot holes Urine has a higher concentration of salts than seawater, thus the same apparatus used to make urine drinkable would also make seawater drinkable.

Mariner exchanges a small handful of dirt, for enough money to buy water plus a pot plant with more dirt in it than he originally exchanged.
Miscellaneous Land visible on the left hand side of the screen, just before the smokers turn up.
Crew or equip-
ment visible
Gas bubbles from breathing apparatus when Mariner is teaching the girl to swim.

Support divers visible when Mariner is diving to the bottom of the ocean [widescreen only].
Movie Quotes:
Zitate:
Mariner: Dry land is not a myth. I've seen it!

Deacon about the Mariner: He's like a turd that won't flush!

Deacon: If I ever see him again, I'm going to cut open his head and eat his brain.

Deacon: Dry land is not just our destination, it is our destiny!
